В современной научной литературе, посвящённой трансграничным перемещениям населения, эти процессы всё чаще описывают в терминах “мобильность” и “лица, совершающие переезды”, а не более привычными словами “миграция” и “мигранты”. Перезагрузка понятийного аппарата и языка, используемых для характеристики людских передвижений, отражает реальные трансформации в пространстве человеческих потоков. Некоторые исследователи, отмечая крайне малую и практически не растущую долю мирового населения, вовлечённого в классические (долгосрочные) миграции, и снижение привлекательности переселения в другие страны на постоянное место жительства, видят в этих процессах возможное приближение конца “века миграции”. Однако динамичное развитие кратковременных и множественных передвижений людских масс может указывать на растущее распространение феномена “перманентной мобильности”.
