В журнале «Russia in Global Affairs» (No. 3 2025 July/September) опубликована статья заместителя директора ИМЭМО РАН Александра Ломанова «Chinese Civilizational Alternative to the Western Development Model».
This article examines the transformation of China’s approach to the relationship between its own civilization and that of the West and compares it to a similar transformation in the USSR under Gorbachev. In the 1980s, disputes over China’s Westernization were prompted by the search for its own path to modernization. Proponents of full-scale adoption of the Western model warned that traditional Chinese social and cultural attitudes could obstruct reforms. In the second half of the 2000s, critics emphasized that Western “universal values” were unacceptably abstract and detached from class and history. China’s “common values of humanity” became the official alternative aimed to foster international cooperation for building a Global Community of Shared Future. In an attempt to elevate its national development strategy to the global level, in 2021, Beijing suggested building “a new form of human civilization.” Contemporary China’s desire to construct and define a civilizational modernity based on its own conceptual instruments is closely related to its growing economic power and international influence.
