Abstract. For Turkey, 2023 began with a catastrophic earthquake that killed more than 50,000 people. In May, the country held presidential elections, incumbent President R. Erdogan won the second round with a minimal advantage in a hard-fought battle with a single candidate from the opposition parties K. Kılıçdaroğlu. The new government formed after the election is pursuing a tight monetary policy, which has helped slow inflation. A grain deal favorable to Turkey was stopped. Turkey lifted its veto on Finland and Sweden joining NATO. After the outbreak of war in the Gaza Strip, R. Erdogan condemned Israel for the numerous civilian casualties in the Palestinian territory, but economic cooperation between Turkey and Israel continues, including in the critical area of oil supplies. Nuclear fuel for the first unit has been delivered to Akkuyu NPP and Turkey has become a nuclear power.
