Abstract. Trump’s presidency, which resembled all four years of a political show with scandals, protests, dismissals on Twitter, investigations and even impeachment, ended, according to the laws of the serial genre, with the failed takeover of the Capitol, disconnecting the losing president from his favorite social network and changing the scenery in the White House. The democratic triumph, however, did not happen: having gained control over the federal government, the Democrats were left alone with the protesting society, half of which were completely dissatisfied with either the outcome of the elections or what the Democrats were preparing for them. Trump’s experience does not inspire hope: in a split society, you can win by representing the interests of one protester, but it is very difficult to stay in power without becoming a national leader.
Keywords: presidential campaign 2020, democratic unity, mobilization of the democratic electorate, pandemic, public protests, demand for change, increased polarization, divided society
