Abstract. For the first time since the United Kingdom European Union membership referendum, in 2020 Brexit political agenda was overshadowed by the COVID19 pandemic and its impact on the economy and society. The UK is among the hardest hit nations by the pandemic. According to the official statistics, in December 2020 the infection caused above 85 thousand deaths. The government measures in response to the pandemic included strict lockdowns which, combined with the Brexit implications, have put a heavy burden on the economy. As a result, the UK suffered the worst annual fall in GDP in 300 years. Social issues and inequalities became more acute, discrepancies in policies have added divisions between Westminster and the Scottish Government, and street protests in summer 2020 caused additional concerns. The start of the mass vaccination campaign provides hope for social and economic recovery. In the long term perspective Brexit remains the major turning point for Britain.
