Abstract. The article examines the causes and premises of the socio–political crisis in Israel following the 2022 elections. One of the key manifestations of this crisis was the unprecedented protests against the judicial reform proposed by Binyamin Netanyahu’s government. Amid the escalating domestic tensions, the Israeli state demonstrated significant vulnerability in the face of major security threats. In October 2023, a terrorist attack launched from the Gaza Strip targeted Israeli civilians, resulting in the deaths of over 1300 people and the capture of more than 200. The authors analyze the Israeli government’s views of and approaches to the Gaza Strip issue. They note that the Israeli leadership has proven unable to focus on a long-term resolution to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The tragedy of October 7, 2023 further radicalized the positions of both the Israeli political elite and society as a whole. In response to the terrorist attack, the Israeli leadership launched the military operation “Iron Swords”, which caused divisions within the national political and military elite. Current post-operation plans suggest that the Israeli government lacks strategic vision for the future of both Israel’s presence in Gaza and of the Gaza Strip as a whole.
