Abstract
The article addresses the rise, specifics and the main manifestations of terrorism in Africa. The author points to the rapid transnationalization of terrorist organizations on the continent since the early 1990s. In a concurrent trend, a number of African countries dropped their support of international terrorism under the pressure from the international community. Despite the prevalence of domestic terrorism that has traditionally accompanied intra-state conflicts on the continent, in the 21st century Islamist terrorist networks, especially those linked to al-Qaeda and the “Islamic State”, have spread in Africa. The article analyzes the prerequisites for the further expansion of radical Islamist influence on the continent and concludes that most African countries are not capable of countering this threat without external support, whether regional or international.
