Abstract

In early 21st century, the United Kingdom plans to modernize its strategic nuclear forces. However, there is no consensus on how it should be done either among the British political elites, or in the coalition government. A 2013 report compared different options for upgrading the UK nuclear forces. It showed that, in order to reduce the cost of maintaining nuclear forces in the future, the government may be prepared to reduce the status of their battle readiness.
