Abstract. Population growth, industrial development and environmental pollution reduce access to usable sources of sweet water. Experts predict that this problem will intensify in the coming decades and that conflicts for control of water sources will become more numerous. The solution not only lies in the field of development and implementation of new technologies, but increasingly acquires a political dimension where the world is still far from formulating any common principles and norms.
