Abstract. Mistakes and miscalculations of the government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz led to the collapse of the “traffic light alliance” of the German Social Democratic Party – Alliance 90/The Greens – Free Democratic Party (FDP), and to early elections to the Bundestag on February 23, 2025.These and other factors boomeranged on the authority of the important partner in the coalition – the FDP. The election campaign focused not only on the personality of the future chancellor, but also on the “coloring” of the government model. An attempt to consolidate the party basing on a fusion of ideas of political and social liberalism has not yet brought any effect. The FDP has lost the election. This is a logical consequence of the erroneous policies of the Free Democrats over the past three years. It is difficult to predict, what influence the Free Democrats may have to form the contours of a polycentric world in which Germany as a European power would be able to give a creative impetus to European and world processes under the conditions of Trumpism. Will the “political grandchildren” of Walter Scheel and Hans-Dietrich Genscher, who made a significant contribution to the detente between the West and the East and to the “Eastern policy”, intend to use the crisis as a chance to correct the situation in the areas of economics, finance, restoration of the country’s sovereignty, and study the positive experience of relations between Berlin and Moscow?

Keywords: FDP, Ch. Lindner, elections to the Bundestag, election program of the Free Democrats, German liberalism, D. Trump, Russia–Germany relations
