Abstract

The article investigates the development of the countries comprising the Central European Union established in 1991 and known as Visegrad Four, as well as the union itself from the start up to the present day. The aim of the analysis is to follow the evolution of the Visegrad Group in the context of the changing international situation and transformation processes that spread over this part of Europe after the collapse of the socialist system. The author traces the whole chain of transformation processes – economic, political, ideological, – the role of convergence with the European Union and NATO, the influence of these factors on establishment and development of the union of Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Czech Republic as well as on shaping of its modern image. In this investigation, special emphasis is laid on the common foreign policy-making of the Four, the impact of world economic crises and current international political problems, such as civil war in Ukraine and the flood of migrants from Asia and Africa.
