Energy Impact on Sustainable Development

Abstract. Energy production and consumption are the basis of economic and social development, climate changes, so the energy issues play a crucial role in sustainable development. Each energy source has its advantages and disadvantages in relation to sustainable development. Burning fossil fuels is the main cause of air pollution and the risk of climate change caused by human activity. The vast majority of energy produced falls on fossil fuels (about 86%) that leads to the release of large amounts of greenhouse gas particularly in oil and coal industries. The negative impact has leaks of the greenhouse gas methane if the natural gas is transported to the long distances. Interest in renewable energy sources (RES) has been steadily growing in the world and renewable energy make a significant contribution to the global energy balance. The disadvantage of RES is the instability of the energy produced by them, so the spare capacity is needed for its compensation, which, in most cases, is generated at conventional power plants by burning fossil fuels, mainly natural gas, which requires additional investment in capacity for both generation and transmission energy. The combination of renewable energy in conjunction with gas power plants for backup power, produce the greenhouse gas emissions, which can be compared with the stand-alone coal generating stations with the same generating capacity. Therefore, renewable energy sources do not completely satisfy the conditions for sustainable development. Nuclear energy has a competitive economy, a positive impact on climate change, which leads to the conclusion that in the future it may become the most attractive and affordable form of energy for sustainable development. At the same time, the share of nuclear power in the world energy production is low, its further development depends on a significant increase in investments in the new technologies that are not expected in the medium term. The most promising direction is the cooperation of traditional organic energy with its RES and nuclear option, which will contain a synergistic technology of organic energy and nuclear hydrogen production technology of water. In this approach, the world energy industry will be developing as a united complex, allowing the best use of each energy technology to secure the sustainable development for many years.
