Abstract. The article highlights the two-year period (1983–1985) when IMEMO was headed by Alexander Yakovlev. This time was characterized by a noticeable improvement of the situation and the Institute’s scientific life revival after the turmoil of 1981–1982. At that time, IMEMO regained its credibility (shaky in the early 80-ties) at home and abroad. It was undoubtedly the merit of its "transit" director who joined the team of the young CPSU General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985.
