Abstract. Under the conditions of globalization a developmental strategy based on utilization of new knowledge and technological breakthroughs became the most efficient for achieving and retaining the leading positions in the world. Basically, the article deals with the role of the national innovation system in the Chinese economy. In this connection a comparative analysis of the levels of different countries’ innovative development is undertaken. A conclusion is made that until now China still lags behind the world’s leading nations in terms of innovation-based development.
