Abstract. The article highlights the biennium in the history of IMEMO (1983–1985), when the Institute was headed by Alexander Yakovlev, a former high-level party functionary, later a Soviet ambassador to Canada. The author reveals the circumstances of Yakovlev's appointment to the directorship of IMEMO and characterizes his activities in the office. Yakovlev managed to stop the attacks on the Institute and restore it to normal operating conditions. In the Institute's history these two years are known as "a time of rehabilitation."
