Abstract. The article deals with the phenomenon of national identity which is increasingly perceived as a crucial factor to unite the society, to ensure the citizens’ involvement in implementation of public policy’s objectives of the socio-political development and to hinder social disintegration. It is noted that a sense of common, supranational identity is spreading in the minds of the EU countries’ residents. However, as the author argues, the situation is still far from the expectations of the pan-Europeans. Moreover, it looks like that the progress of the pan-Europeanism has reached a certain limit. The problem of overcoming it becomes more and more complex.
