Abstract. Kiev's hopes for stopping the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline were not achieved. As a result of the compromise reached between Berlin and Washington the construction was completed. The launch of the Nord Stream 2 can result in great losses for the Ukrainian state. Therefore, Ukraine continues to fight against the new northern route, hoping to prevent its launch or make its operation as difficult as possible. At the same time, the Kiev authorities are trying to secure guarantees for the preservation of Russian gas transit for another 15 years with the help of Western allies and to get compensation for the damage that will be caused to Ukraine in the event of a termination or a sharp reduction in gas transit.
