Abstract. On March 25, 2018 the 100th anniversary of the Belarusian People’s Republic (BNR) was marked. The BNR formed in 1918 on the territory occupied by Ger-man troops did not receive international recognition. The short-lived existence of the BNR is of great importance for the modern Belarusian opposition which considers the formation of the BNR as a starting point for independence of the republic, announcing the date of March 25 as one of its iconic symbols. In 2018 the main holiday of the radical opposition was celebrated for the first time almost at the state level.

Keywords: Belarus, Belarusian People’s Republic (BNR), “Freedom Day”, opposition, nationalism
