Abstract. Political and military situation grows increasingly more strained on Russia’s western borders. NATO builds up its military potential and moves its infrastructure closer to the Russian borders. The Baltic region becomes the most militarized one on the continent. Expansion of NATO military infrastructure here is carried out not only to serve collective Western interests  but  also  under pressure of local political elites. Anti-Russian hysteria in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia has become a convenient excuse for transformation of the Baltic countries’ territory into a NATO advanced base for “containment” of Russia.
