The book looks at the major trends and developments in East Asian economies since after the Asian crisis of 1997-1998 up to the first decade of the current century. Starting with a brief retrospective analysis of the «East Asian economic miracle», as well as the background and lessons of the Asian crisis, the author presents a wide panorama of the East Asian economy and business at the beginning of the current century, using a wide range of literary sources and capitalizing on the experience of his own accumulated during his living and working in the region.

The major themes are the dynamics, factors and new features of the region's economic growth and the transformation of East Asian economic model. The latter is looked upon from the three angles: transformation of the economic role of the state, of the corporate model (ownership, corporate governance, strategies) and labor relations. The author argues that the East Asian economic model, whose major features are the key role in the economic development played by the state and its industrial policy; and paternalistic labor relations, is already history. In the final part of the book the author investigates the process of East Asian regional integration.
