The Threat of Terrorism in Southeast Asia Persists

The article notes that despite the strengthening of the legislative framework for combating terrorism, the arrests of leaders of terrorist organizations, careful monitoring of cyberspace, and the spread of deradicalization programs, the danger of terrorism in the region is not decreasing. In the Philippines, the authorities are most concerned about the activity of the Abu Sayyaf* terrorist group, in Singapore and Malaysia - the radicalization of youth, in Indonesia - the new tactics of the Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist organization and the presence of dormant terrorist cells influenced by ISIS*. If Jemaah Islamiyah* has changed tactics to achieve its ultimate goal of building a caliphate in Indonesia from a "bullet to a vote" and intends to change the country's governance system from the inside, then the construction of a caliphate by ISIS* supporters is foreseen only by force. ISIS* followers are also being identified in other Southeast Asian countries, such as the Philippines, which remains an attractive place for ISIS* operations a safe haven for foreign terrorist fighters. In Singapore and Malaysia, the group most susceptible to religious indoctrination is young people under the age of 25. In these countries, the threat of terrorism from ISIS* exists at a potential level mainly in the form of narratives and ideology. The author of the article concludes that these narratives may intensify with the deepening of the conflict in the Middle East.
