The work includes the analysis of the model of sustainable development introduced at the 1992 Rio de Janeiro UN Conference on Environment and Development. There is a heated controversy in academic and political circles of our country about what way Russia should take. As soon as the sustainable development is based on the clear criterion of timeless survival of mankind as a biological species, analysts consider it as the alternative to the mainstream models of liberal market and centralized planning, “the third way” of the development of the society. The author studies the possibilities of using the model in the elaboration of national security strategy and introduction of new Russian international politics in the context of global crisis.
