The monograph focuses on formation and development of the welfare state in EU countries. The authors argue that, despite the convergence process caused by globalization and European integration, specific national models still exist. Major differences can be seen in such dimensions of the welfare state, as labour market regulation, social expenditure, family policy, investment in human capital, reception and adaptation of migrants, social activity of business and the third sector. Special attention is paid to the consequences of the European debt crisis and the impact of neo-liberal reforms on the emerging European social model.

Keywords: welfare state | EU | European integration | family policy |
