The monograph dwells on the entire spectrum of problems stemming from the expansion of the European Union to the East: modernization of the European economic system, changes in the process of political integration, the institutional reform. The authors examine the attitudes of individual EU countries to that process, the way East European countries are preparing to join the EU and the implications of the expansion for Russia. They draw a conclusion that, eventually, Russia is more likely to gain than to lose.
