South Korea-Cambodia agricultural cooperation through the Saemaul Undong (New Village Movement) program holds great promise for sustainable rural development in Cambodia. The historic success of this program in South Korea, where it has helped modernize infrastructure, increase farmers' incomes, and strengthen social capital through the principles of self-management, diligence, and collective action, has the potential to be adapted to Cambodian realities. About 70% of Cambodia's population depends on the agricultural sector in one way or another and faces several challenges: low productivity, climate risks (floods, droughts), and poor infrastructure. Saemaul Undong’s approaches, such as the creation of rural cooperatives, training in modern agricultural techniques, and the development of microcredit, can strengthen the economic resilience of communities and reduce dependence on external aid. Key areas of cooperation include technology exchange (introduction of drip irrigation, climate-resilient seeds), training of local leaders, and financial integration along the lines of Korea's Saemaul Geumgo credit unions. Pilot projects, such as the KOICA initiatives in Battambang province, are already showing progress in increasing farmers' incomes, improving infrastructure, and strengthening social cohesion. However, success depends on adapting the program to local conditions and addressing structural problems such as unfair crop prices and limited access to markets. The Korean experience needs to be combined with the active participation of Cambodian communities and government support for long-term impact. Overcoming barriers such as hierarchical structures and donor dependency requires a focus on education and building local governance institutions. This partnership can be a model for a "smart village," where traditional values are complemented by innovation to ensure food security and climate resilience.
