This work is the first part in a series of three publications, analyzing various aspects of interactions among natural gas and electricity markets in the USA. The first part combines the following research issues: genesis of natural gas transportation market; price setting mechanism at natural gas wholesale market and system of government regulation of physical gas and electricity markets. Special attention is paid to the governmental policy ensuring stable investment inflow into gas transportation system; development of market competition and curbing of monopoly effects in different segments of gas market The second and third parts, which will be published till the end of 2012, focus on functioning of spot and financial gas and electricity markets as well as on business models of gas and electricity markets participants.
