The article is devoted to the study of the attitude of the Indian ruling class and social groups serving it to the presence of China and the United States in the Indian Ocean. The history of this presence, its perception in Chinese, Indian and American discourse is considered. The author believes that for India's elites, China appears to be a "convenient rival" as a source of constant existential fear that will never turn into reality. This fear, however, affects Indian society so strongly that it itself becomes the subject of securitization.
