The article attempts to describe Kazakhstanination-building model which is based on a combination of ethnic and civil approaches. Heroic and “tragic” modes of national memory are considered as separate components of the Kazakhstani leadership's course on social consolidation, with cases of Kazakhstan Independence Day and Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repression (and Hunger) being set as examples of its implementation.
