Political science has not as yet come to terms with the connotations of social identity and its' political dimension. As a subjective component of the political process, political identity is of prior importance in understanding the motivation of political action and the choice of models of political behavior. The paper outlines the focal points of political identity studies and gives an overview of the main actors engaged in the process of political identity formation with special attention to the role of the modern State.
