This is the first issue of the IMEMO bulletin «Pathways to Peace and Security» (in 1987–2011 published as «Pathways to Security»). The current issue covers a range of international security issues and human security threats. It features critical analyses of the challenges posed by European Missile Defense, prospects for political settlement in Afghanistan, methods of information warfare, humanitarian and other aspects of cassette weapons, and a range of conflict management models that have been applied in the Balkans.
Russian and foreign authors also comment on the 2011 terrorist attacks in Norway, the evolution of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the activity of US AFRICOM in Central Africa etc. The issue concludes by book reviews on some of the key recent Russian and foreign publications in the field of Peace and Conflict Studies.
