The Sea of Okhotsk: Success or Concessions?
Publication Type:

ISSN 0131-2812

In 2015 the Russian Federation completely extended its rights on the continental shelf area in the central part of the Okhotsk Sea, located beyond the exclusive 200-mile economic zone. This process took place in full accordance with the rules and provisions of the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention by appealing to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. However, this development has led to significant reduction of the legal status of the Sea of Okhotsk, especially in comparison with what was assigned in domestic legal doctrine previously. A critical analysis of what has happened and how this event should be considered due to Russian national interest, is given in this review.
