The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 is a backbone document in ocean spaces and resources management. The U.S. played a key role in the creation and adoption of this document. However, ideological priorities and foreign policy revision by Republican administration led to the refusal to ratify it. Nevertheless, the nonalignment policy not only promoted the revision of some articles within the additional Agreement 1994, but formed a list of statements and declarations with interpretations of Convention’s articles taking into account U.S. national interests. As a result, prospects for the U.S. accession to the Convention largely depend on U.S. ideological development, current political situation and the manner in which the problem of the continental shelf delimitation in the Arctic will be resolved.
