Remoteness for the global production and consumption centers, imperfect technical facilities and political risks associated with a lack of transparency in its economy had left Turkmenistan on the sideways of the global investment process. The article discusses how engagement of Chinese companies in Turkmenistan's gas sector which introduced new to post-soviet Asian countries investment concept 'bankroll in exchange for energy' opened up a large and rapidly growing gas market to Turkmenistan. Experimental and politically motivated, the Caspian Development Corporation European project submitted to Turkmenistan is examined. It is emphasized that regardless the questionable efficiency of the project, diversification of energy resources import is considered to be a key direction in the EU energy security strategy. For that reason, the Caspian Development Corporation may enjoy firm backing from European investment institutions.
