`Who owns America`s History?`: Dynamics of conflictNarratives around Confederate Monuments
Publication Type:

ISSN 2070-5476

The article examines the conflicting narratives surrounding Confederate States of America (CSA, 1861-1865) monuments in the United States as a tool in the struggle over collective memory and national identity. There are four types of conflict (national-local, value-based, ideological, and intra-group), which reflect the transformation of the memorial space dedicated to the CSA from the second half of the 19th century to the 2020s. These conflicts demonstrate how Confederate monuments serve as indicators of the redefinition of the boundaries of the American nation and its historical canon.
