India and “the countries of the South Seas”: geo-economic interests and geopolitical imperatives

The article analyzes the policy of India in the countries of the Southeast Asia. Activation of the country’s foreign policy activity in this area is associated with the “eastern politics” of India, which has become a kind of reaction to the collapse
of the Soviet Union, a fundamental geopolitical ally, “the world’s largest democracy.” “Eastern policy” was originally seen as a means to “neutralize” the increased geo-economic and geo-political activities in China, and as an opportunity for accelerated development of the north-eastern states of India, isolated from the “mainland” by a narrow isthmus. The article also examines India’s politics towards Japan and South Korea in the light of eff ectiveness. Th e author emphasizes that India will have to balance its overseas gains in Asia-Pacifi c active foreign economic activity.
