Until recent time the defence and security public procurements in the EU member-states were governed only by national law. It created serious obstacles to a common defence equipment market in Europe and exempted the majority of defence procurement contracts from competition. In practice most contracts were awarded to national suppliers. Implementation of the EU legal regulations into national law of the EU member-states changed the situation fundamentally. The questions are discussed in this study are as follows. The influence of the EU legal regulations on the British national public defence procurements, including the field of R&D contracts is discussed. The procurement procedures which are set out by the modern contracting system and existing restrictions are also examined.
