.In February 1986 mass non-violent actions, to some extent resembling celebrations, put an end to the dictatorship of Marcos in the Philippines. Which features of the national culture made possible a bloodless peaceful settlement of the conflict between society and those in power? How did the US and the Catholic Church influence the situation in the former US colony and the only Eastern country where the bulk of the population were Catholic? To answer these and other questions, the author dwells on the history of the country in the context of the political processes and confrontations that determined the world situation in the 20th century.
