This article is devoted to the decentralized system of the U.S. healthcare providers. The author identifies the difficulties faced by American hospitals and primary care physicians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among them are the shortage of personal protection equipment, shortage and professional burnout of medical workforce, decline of profits, caused by the slump of regular in person visits. However, the trends of recent years that are systematized in the paper show that all these problems existed long before the pandemic and were laid into the private healthcare system. The author examines the prospects for the U.S. medical facilities after the pandemic. Many trends that only accelerated with the onset of the pandemic will persist. Increased government involvement in health care is necessary to ensure access to hospital care as only government support measures helped to prevent massive hospital closure caused by the financial crisis.
