The paper presents an analysis and assessment of dynamics in greenhouse gas emissions over the past 10 years. It overviews the main carbon pricing mechanisms in the world and includes a comparative analysis between the carbon tax and the emissions trading system (ETS). The conclusion is that most countries currently prefer to introduce emissions trading rather than a carbon tax. Since 2013, there has been an increase in emissions covered by carbon pricing mechanisms in East Asia and North America. At the same time, in 2021-2022. China's launch of ETS emissions has made it the largest market. In addition to countries, almost half of the world's top 500 companies use the carbon pricing mechanism.
