The paper deals with some important similarities as well as differences between two countries, Brazil and Russia. According to the author’s opinion, it is necessary to take into account not only economic indicators the both gigantic countries perform to the world but also the long-term qualitative trends either of them demonstrates in economy and approaches to the social problems in the last 15-20 years. An analysis of these trends allows to conclude that Brazil and Russia are moving in diverging directions. Brazil, despite her serious difficulties and obstacles to new modernisation, has a real chance to join a group of developed nations whereas Russia drifts to the world periphery what can have negative effects for the global stability.
