December 4
Alexander Lomanov, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of IMEMO, Dr. of Science (History), spoke in the framework of Session I. "The Most Important Processes of Regional Development in Asia".
For decades, the Asian region has been an ideal example of low level of international tension, readiness of states to cooperate and their focus on the tasks of economic development. Now the global situation is changing, serious changes are taking place in the international order as a whole, and the regulatory and mediating role of institutions is weakening. Interstate associations in Asia are also not free from the negative impacts of global instability. The aim of the session is to identify the most urgent trends in the development of modern Asia, point out the main problems, factors mitigating the negative impact of global and interstate contradictions, and potential ways of the region's development in the future.
In the framework of Session II. "The Potential for Détente of International Tension" spoke Alexey Kupriyanov, Head of the Centre of the Indo-Pacific Region of IMEMO, Cand. of Science (History).
The growth of international tensions along the Russia-West and China-US lines is the factor that most threatens the stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region. Russia, as well as Asian countries, is interested in ensuring that existing conflicts do not have a decisive impact on the international environment and do not lead to the collapse of existing economic and political ties. In light of this, in modern conditions, the easing of international tension is a priority goal of the political dialog between Russia and Asian states, the realization of which will make it possible to understand how to mitigate the consequences of the objective increase in contradictions in the Asian region and globally. The main question remains what efforts can be made to ensure that the state of affairs in world politics is regulated and protected from dangerous escalation.
