V International Conference "The World Majority in New Realities: the Regional Dimension"

On November 30 – December 1, 2023, the V International Conference "The World Majority in New Realities: the Regional Dimension" was held at HSE University. The Anniversary Conference on regional developments amid global trends was intended to unite the efforts of leading Russian and foreign regional scientists in discussing the most important processes of development of various regions of the modern world, as well as the issues of methodology of regional studies as an independent direction of scientific knowledge.

IMEMO employees took part in the event and made presentations:

Dmitry Trenin, Lead Researcher of the Center for International Security of IMEMO, Cand. of Science (History), spoke during the Plenary Report "Russia's Policy on the World Majority";

Ekaterina Shumitskaya, Senior Researcher of the Department for European Political Studies of IMEMO, Cand. of Science (Politics), took part in the discussion of Section 2. "Western Politics and Institutions in New Reality";

Evgeny Kanaev, Lead Researcher of the Center for Asia Pacific Studies of IMEMO, Dr. of Science (History), moderated Section 3. "Modern Regional Studies: Methodological Issues".

Within the framework of Section 4. "South Asia: Foreign policy and Economic Priorities" the speakers were:

  • Alexey Kupriyanov, Head of the Center of the Indo-Pacific of IMEMO, Cand. of Science (History), – with the report "Indo-Mediterranean Region: Political, Cultural and Economic Basis of a New Construct";
  • Gleb Makarevich, Junior Research Fellow of the Center of the Indo-Pacific Region, – "Pakistan in World Politics: Aspirations and Constraints". The speaker examined labor, financial, scientific and technical resources of Pakistan, pointed out the peculiarities of foreign economic policy (trade balance and trade structure of exports), and also compared the economic potential of Pakistan and Bangladesh. The considered indicators do not allow us to speak about the growth of Islamabad's political influence in the short and medium term, but this will not be an obstacle to pursuing a proactive foreign policy.

The conference is organized by the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the HSE University.
