Central Asian Forum

On July 13-14, 2023 Astana is hosting the Central Asian Forum on the theme "Asia in a Changing World: Agenda for the Future". Academician Alexander Dynkin, President of IMEMO, was a speaker at the second session "Asia in the Era of Globalization and Regionalization: Image of the Future".

The world is on the threshold of complex geopolitical shifts. Against the backdrop of growing globalization, new formats of regionalization are increasing in parallel. All this is reflected in the growing competition for the establishment of new rules and mechanisms of international relations, including the security architecture. In this context, Asia is acquiring the status of a key center of political and geo-economic attraction. According to the forecasts of the world's leading experts – "the 21st century will be the century of Asia". However, with population growth, climate change, aggravation of territorial disputes, and intensified global rivalry between leading countries, the Asian region may face serious negative consequences. For the developing countries of Central, South and Southeast Asia, the shift of the center from West to East will be of strategic importance. Timely adaptation to the new realities of international processes and integration into the new paradigm of the world order can give the necessary impetus to domestic and regional development.

Issues discussed:

  • What are the contours of global transformation and what is Asia's place in these processes?
  • What can be the main strategies of adaptation of small and medium-sized states to the transformation of the world order?
  • How can small and medium-sized states ensure the realization of their own interests in the period of confrontation between the leading powers?
  • How is the concept of sovereignty being redefined in contemporary international relations?
  • The responsibility of Asia's great powers for the "peaceful rise" of the continent: what initiatives by states in the region can make Asia a secure region?
  • How can the diplomacy of Asia's small and medium-sized states maintain regional stability?
Also among the speakers:
  • Mohammad Hassan Sheikh Al Eslami – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, President of the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS), Iran;
  • Li Xin – Director of the Institute of Eurasian Studies, Center for International Legal Training and Cooperation for the SCO, PRC;
  • Ashok Sajjanhar – former Indian Ambassador to Kazakhstan, President of the Institute of Global Studies, India;
