2430The Special Issue on “Addressing Terrorism, Violent Extremism and Radicalization (Perspectives from Russia and the United States)” of the IMEMO’s journal “Pathways to Peace and Security” (¹ 1(52), 2017) is out of print.
This academic effort, involving nine Russian and eight U.S. researchers, explores not only direct manifestations of terrorism, but also the sources, drivers, dynamics, and implications of terrorism and violent extremism, and radicalization processes, in both Russia-U.S. and the broader transnational contexts, as well as in the context of armed conflicts in Syria and Afghanistan and in the surrounding regions. Analysis of ways to respond to these threats focuses not only on counterterrorist operations, but also on the problems of prevention, preemption, and prophylactics of terrorism, countering violent extremism and radicalization, deradicalization, and efforts to address and resolve major armed conflicts where terrorism is employed as one of the main tactics. The search for ways to activate the U.S.-Russia dialogue and cooperation on antiterrorism, while important, was not a goal in itself of this academic effort. Rather, considering all the complexities and constraints imposed on such cooperation by the present state of bilateral relations, contributing Russian and U.S. authors sought to undertake sober, realistic and critical analysis of existing problems and prospects in this field in the Russian-American context. This context goes beyond direct interaction at the inter-state level, allowing us to take a broader look at the problem, analyze comparative threats to Russia and the United States and their antiterrorism experience and strategies, parallel and not (necessarily) coordinated actions in the same direction, and a range of potential formats for dialogue and cooperation at different levels.
