On September 28, 2016 the international seminar “Russia and the US in the Asia-Pacific” was held in the Conference-Hall of the IMEMO.
The seminar was dedicated to the launch of the report that was the product of over two years of Track II dialogue between Asia-Pacific experts from the two countries jointly organized by the Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). The panel discussed Russian and US policy in Asia and report's recommendations.
Russia and the United States are both Pacific powers. Their future prosperity and security depends to a significant extent on developments in the Asia-Pacific region. They are key actors in regional diplomatic processes and multilateral fora. Their militaries in the theatre have capabilities that no other state can match. Despite recent downturn in Russia–US relations and policy divergences over some aspects of developments in the Asia-Pacific, bilateral cooperation in Asia could be significant for both countries, the region and global security.
Speakers:
Academician Alexander Dynkin – Director of the Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO), Russian Academy of Sciences.
Dr Samuel Charap – Senior Fellow for Russia and Eurasia at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, based in the IISS–Americas office in Washington DC.
Dr Vasily Mikheev – Deputy Director of the Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO), Russian Academy of Sciences, with responsibility for the Institute’s work on the Asia-Pacific.
