The international conference devoted to the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Indonesia’s Independence

On September 27, 2005, on the initiative of the Society of Friendship and Cooperation with Indonesia, an international conference devoted to the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Indonesia’s Independence was held in the IMEMO conference hall.

A welcoming address to the conference participants, among which were representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Russian Federation, was delivered by G.I.Chufrin, Corresponding Member of Russian Academy of Sciences, IMEMO Deputy Director.

In their presentations, Susanto Pujomartono, Ambassador of Indonesia to the RF, and Yu.V.Plotnikov, former Ambassador of the RF to Indonesia, decorated with the Indonesian «Star for Outstanding Service» shortly before the Conference, pointed to remarkable progress in the interaction between Russia and Indonesia, namely, in their trade, technical and cultural cooperation. In the speakers’ opinion, the two countries should make a joint effort to expand and consolidate their ties in every sphere, including R&D and advanced technologies.

Presentations were also made by Dr. A.Yu. Drugov (Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS) – «Russia and Indonesia: Some Common Problems of Developmen»; Prof. V.A.Tsyganov (Institute of Asian and African Studies, Moscow State University) – «The Present State and the Future of Russian-Indonesian Ties in the Sphere of Higher Education»; Dr. L.F.Pakhomova (Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS) – «Summing up the Results of Indonesia’s 60-year Development (1945-2005)»; Dr. A.V.Popov (Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS) – «Problems of Development of Military-Technical Cooperation between Russia and Indonesia».

The conference participants were also addressed by Indonesian Embassy officials: Berlian Helmy (Economic Adviser) – «Indonesian Economy in 2004-2005 and in the Future»; Ceri F. Sidharta – «Building a Bridge between Indonesia and Russia»; and Adek Triyana Yudhaswari – «Developing Indonesian-Russian Ties in the Area of Tourism and Culture».


The conference participants agreed to publish, in the Russian and Indonesian languages, collected reports and articles on the subjects covered in the course of discussion.

The conference concluded with an original dance show where national Javanese, Balinese and Sumatran dances were performed by the Indonesian Embassy employees and students of the Institute of Asian and African Studies.
