The article “The game went wrong: the political crisis in Pakistan and its consequences for Russia” by Junior Research Fellow for the Group on South Asia and Indian Ocean of the Center for Asia Pacific Studies of the IMEMO Gleb Makarevich was published on the website of the Russian International Affairs Council on April 22, 2022.

The factor of Imran Khan's visit to Moscow in February 2022 played a role in the course of the crisis, but it should not be overestimated.

At the same time, since Islamabad seems to be focused on the improvement of the relations with Washington, Moscow, in turn, cannot avoid a short-term setback. The bad news is that Russia-Pakistan cooperation may be "frozen" for a while. At least until the end of the special military operation and until the creation of an updated format of the relations between Pakistan and the United States. The relatively good news is that Russia and Pakistan have not yet to find anything, which would be terrible to lose.

Therefore, the possible slowdown in the dynamics of the development of the Russia-Pakistan relations provides an opportunity to think over a coherent strategy for future interaction with Islamabad instead of the "reactive" approach used in recent years.
