
On April 3, 2024, the Center for International Security of the IMEMO held a Working Seminar on the impact of the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO on the strategic security of the Russian Federation.
During the Seminar, changes in the military-strategic situation in the western direction were discussed, directions were outlined for analyzing the consequences of such changes in the context of maintaining the effectiveness of the Russian strategic deterrent forces (defensive and offensive, nuclear and non-nuclear), as well as preparing possible response options.
This work is particularly relevant in connection with the change in the military-administrative division of the Russian Federation, in particular, the formation of the Leningrad Military District, as well as the ongoing development of military infrastructure in the Arctic region.
The seminar was chaired by Academician Alexey Arbatov, Head of the Center for International Security of IMEMO.
The main report “The Impact of the Accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO on the Combat Sustainability of the Strategic Deterrence Forces of the Russian Federation” was made by Dmitry Stefanovich, Research Fellow of the Center for International Security.
The Seminar was also attended by the employees of the Center for post-Soviet Studies and the Center for Strategic Planning Studies.
