On December 13, 2023, Marina Strezhneva, Chief Research Fellow of the Department of International Political Problems of IMEMO, Dr. of Science (Politics), took part in the seminar of the cycle "Transatlantic Conversations" at the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The series is devoted to the complex of interaction between the US and the EU.
Employees of the Institute of Europe presented their reports at this seminar: Natalia Kondratieva (economic aspects) and Alexey Sindeev (political aspects).
Speaking during the discussion, Marina Strezhneva drew attention to the Chinese factor, which constitutes an important challenge for transatlantic relations. According to her estimates, as a result of a serious escalation of tension around Taiwan, which seems inevitable over time, the Europeans will not be able to maintain the current (already low) level of strategic autonomy from the United States., and they, in particular, will become much more active in seeking to strengthen the institutions of economic governance in the Transatlantic, if possible isolating this space from the rest of the world.
