84Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences together with the Russian International Affairs Council (the RIAC) and with the journal “World Economy and International Relations” (The “MEMO Journal”) continues a series of scientific and practical seminars devoted to the research of current problems of international relations. The topic of the third seminar is "Sanctions for peace in Donbas: what to expect from Russia".
On February 21, President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin signed decrees recognizing the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics as sovereign and independent states, which is justified by the will of the people of the DPR and LPR and Ukraine's rejection of a peaceful settlement of the conflict in accordance with the Minsk Agreements.
Most foreign leaders met Russia's decision to recognize the DPR and the LPR sharply negatively. The United States, Britain, the European Union, Canada, Australia, and Japan intend to punish Moscow for this step with sanctions.
During the online seminar on February 24, 2022, it is planned to discuss the following issues:
- How high are the risks related to sanctions?
- What areas can sanctions affect?
- How does the US sanctions machine work?
- What could be the damage to the Russian economy if these measures are taken?
The event will also present the results of a study of US sanctions policy published in the journal "World Economy and International Relations".
The participants are:
- Director of the IMEMO, Corresponding Member of the RAS Feodor Voitolovsky;
- Deputy Director of the IMEMO, Corresponding Member of the RAS Sergey Afontsev;
- Head of the Center for North American Studies of the IMEMO Victoria Zhuravleva;
- Director of Programs at the Russian International Affairs Council Ivan Timofeev.
